R .J. Stokes & Co. Ltd is an environmentally conscious company, striving to minimise waste and recycle its packaging wherever possible. Here are a few guidelines on how you can help in recycling packaging waste.

Why Recycle?

In the UK around 75 per cent of waste is currently disposed of in landfill sites. Landfill disposal - the burial of waste material underground - has been popular due to its low cost and the availability of suitable land in certain parts of the country but is now recognised as not being a sustainable method of waste disposal. Some parts of England and Wales don't have enough space for landfill waste disposal. Landfill sites are also a major source of methane - a powerful greenhouse gas contributing to climate change.

Landfill disposal is being discouraged in favour of more environmentally friendly options and national strategies are in place to deal with packaging. The main objectives are to reduce the amount of packaging and packaging waste, to reuse packaging where possible, and to recover and recycle increasing amounts of the packaging waste that flows into the waste stream.

What to Recycle?

Almost all packaging on products from Stokes Tiles is either cardboard or plastic. Both are generally recyclable.

Some products, such as certain adhesives and grouts are classed as hazardous, requiring separate disposal rather than recycling. This will also apply to any contaminated packaging.

A good place to visit for recycling information for a variety of products is www.wasteonline.org.uk.

How to Recycle

Many local authorities include recycling in their refuse collection service, for example issuing blue bins for clean paper and cardboard. Alternatively, and for bulkier loads, they may have Household Waste Recycling Sites.

"Bring Sites" tend to be common, often in places such as supermarket car parks, and accepting items such as paper, glass, and drink cans.

To find a site near you, check out www.recycle-more.co.uk. This internet site allows you to enter your postcode, and it will then show the location of your local recycling centres, including a list of the types of waste they will accept.

Recycling and Hazardous Symbols

This is the internationally recognised symbol (known as the Mobius Loop) which may be found on a variety of packaging materials to show that they are recyclable.

It may also include a number showing the percentage of recycled material used in its manufacture, for our products it will most commonly be found on the tile cartons.

These symbols are found on recyclable plastic materials, generally moulded into the container (rather than printed on the label)				The numbers & abbreviations show the actual type of plastic it is made from and are used by the recycler.			These are the symbols for recyclable aluminium and steel. They are unlikely to be found on our products.

Note that some items may be hazardous if not used and disposed of correctly. Typical of these are some adhesives and grouts, and some cleaning materials.

They will have warnings - including hazard symbol(s) as shown below - printed on the packaging, and are unlikely to be suitable either for disposal by the normal household refuse collection or for recycling.

Some of these products only pose a hazard during use. For example, cement dust can cause burns and skin irritation, but is safe once it has hardened.

When products do contain hazard warnings, always be sure to take appropriate precautions when using that product. For example, wear suitable protective clothing, eye protection, etc.

These symbols are much less common on tiling products. Be aware that some products do not contain symbols, but can nevertheless cause harm to skin, eyes, etc, or if swallowed or inhaled. They may also be flammable. Always read the label for health warnings.
